Aswan is the hottest of Egypt's main destinations. It sits further south than Luxor and runs a few degrees warmer, which turns a mild winter into an excellent one and a hot summer into a punishing one. In December and January the daytime highs sit around 23 to 25°C with dry, clear air and almost no chance of rain — conditions most European visitors would call perfect.
Between May and September, daytime temperatures regularly pass 40°C and can reach 45°C or more. Sightseeing is still possible, but only in the early morning, and the middle of the day has to be written off.

Why Aswan is warmer than Luxor
Aswan is about 215 km south of Luxor, and that distance shows in the thermometer. It is consistently a few degrees warmer, and the difference is most useful in winter: a January day that is pleasantly mild in Luxor is comfortably warm in Aswan.
The same difference works against you in summer. If you are visiting Upper Egypt between June and August and only have time for one city, the heat argument favours Luxor — not because it is cool, but because it is marginally less severe.
The air is exceptionally dry year round, and rain is effectively nonexistent. Aswan records around 2 mm of rainfall in an entire year.
Season by season
**Peak season, December to February.** The best weather and the highest prices. Hotels, Nile cruises and Abu Simbel flights all book out well in advance, and the sites are busy from mid-morning onwards. Worth booking two to three months ahead.
**Shoulder season, October to November and March to April.** Warmer than peak but still very workable, with noticeably fewer people and better availability. March and November in particular offer close to peak conditions at lower prices. If your dates are flexible, this is where the value is.
**Low season, May to September.** Very hot and very quiet. Prices drop substantially and the monuments are almost empty, which some travellers genuinely prefer. It only works if you accept an early start every day and treat the afternoon as rest time.
The Abu Simbel sun festival
Twice a year, on 22 February and 22 October, sunlight penetrates the length of the Great Temple at Abu Simbel and illuminates the statues in the inner sanctuary. The temple was built to align this way more than three thousand years ago, and the alignment survived the temple being cut apart and moved in the 1960s.
These are the two busiest days of the year in Aswan. Hotels and flights book out months ahead, and the site is crowded well before dawn. If you want to be there, plan it far in advance. If you would rather avoid the crowds, avoid those two weeks entirely.
Nights are colder than people expect
The dry desert air that makes Aswan pleasant in the day also lets the heat escape quickly after sunset. January nights can drop below 10°C, and it feels colder on the water.
This catches out almost every winter visitor. A sunset felucca in January is genuinely cold once the sun goes, and the boats have no shelter. Bring a proper layer, not just a shirt — a fleece or a light jacket, and something for your head if you feel the cold.

When to visit for a Nile cruise
Most Nile cruises run between Aswan and Luxor, and the same seasons apply — but a cruise changes the calculation in summer. You spend the hottest hours on an air-conditioned vessel moving on the water rather than in a vehicle between sites, and sightseeing is scheduled early. If you must travel to Upper Egypt in July or August, a cruise is the most comfortable way to do it.
In winter, cruises sell out earliest of anything in Aswan. If your trip includes one in December or January, book that before you book anything else.
