Two rock temples stand above Lake Nasser — the great temple of Ramses II, fronted by four twenty-metre statues, and the smaller temple he built for Nefertari. In the 1960s both were cut into blocks and rebuilt sixty metres higher to save them from the waters of the High Dam, one of the largest engineering rescues ever attempted. Best time to visit
When to go
October to April, as a day trip from Aswan. Arrive early — the site opens at sunrise and the light on the facade is best in the first two hours, before the tour buses arrive around nine. The sun festival on 22 February and 22 October draws large crowds and needs booking months ahead. Summer here is the hottest place in Egypt and the visit is genuinely difficult after ten in the morning.

- "Road convoys leave Aswan around 4am and take about three hours each way
- The flight from Aswan takes forty-five minutes and allows a comfortable half day
- There is no shade at the site — hat, water and sunglasses are not optional
- Photography inside the temples requires a separate ticket
