The short answer
Marsa Alam works all year. There is no month you cannot come. But the trip you get in March is not the trip you get in August, and the difference is bigger than the temperature chart suggests.
If you want the single best compromise between warm water, tolerable air temperature and a reef that is not crowded, aim for late March to May, or October to mid-November. If you are a diver chasing the warmest water and do not mind heat on land, the late summer and early autumn months have the warmest sea of the year. If price is what matters most, the deep summer weeks are the cheapest by a wide margin, and there is a reason for that.
Spring: March to May
This is the most comfortable stretch of the year for most visitors. Air temperatures are pleasant rather than punishing, the sea has warmed up from the winter low, and the days are long.
The one thing to know about spring on this coast is wind. It is the windiest part of the year, which is excellent news if you came to kitesurf and less welcome if you had a specific boat trip in mind. Wind can also mean an occasional cancelled excursion — an operator that offers you a rebooking rather than an argument is worth choosing.
Crowds build through spring towards Easter, then ease again.
Summer: June to August
This is the hottest period of the year and the heat inland is severe. On the coast the sea breeze takes the edge off, which is why summer works better in Marsa Alam than in Luxor.
That distinction matters if you are planning the Luxor day trip. In midsummer that trip means several hours in a vehicle and then walking around open archaeological sites in the hottest hours. It is entirely doable and thousands of people do it every year, but it is not the same day out that it is in November. If Luxor is on your list and you are travelling in July or August, an early start is not a nice-to-have.
Underwater, summer is genuinely good — warm, calm water and excellent visibility. Prices are also at their lowest, and resorts are quieter than the shoulder months.
Autumn: September to November
For many divers this is the best window of the year. The sea holds its summer warmth well into autumn, the air has come down from its peak, and the wind has dropped from the spring highs.
September is still hot. October is close to ideal. November is the month we would recommend to almost anyone who is not tied to school holidays — comfortable on land, warm in the water, and the reefs are not busy.
Winter: December to February
Winter here is mild by European standards and the sun is reliable, which is why the resorts fill up over Christmas and New Year despite it being the coolest part of the year.
The sea is at its coldest now. It is still swimmable and people snorkel every day of the winter, but if you feel the cold you will want a wetsuit rather than just a rash vest, and dive centres rent them. Evenings can be genuinely cool — bring something with sleeves, which surprises people who packed for "Egypt in the sun".
Winter is the best time of year for the Luxor trip. Walking around the Valley of the Kings in January is a completely different experience from doing it in July.
Choosing by what you came for
Warmest water for diving and snorkelling — late summer into autumn.
Most comfortable overall — October and November, or April and May.
Best for combining the coast with Luxor — November through February.
Kitesurfing — spring, for the wind.
Lowest prices — deep summer.
Quietest reefs — avoid the Christmas and New Year weeks and the Easter period. Any ordinary week outside those is calm.
A note on turtles
The turtles and dugongs in the seagrass bays north of Marsa Alam are resident, not seasonal. There is no month when they are not there.
What changes with the season is the water conditions and the crowds, not the animals. What changes with the time of day matters more than either — mornings are consistently better than afternoons, in every month of the year.
